The title track song, Bulla ki jaana main kaun (Bulla, I know not who I am!) is a Punjabi number in Rabbi Shergill’s debut album, ‘Rabbi’. It was released in 2004 by ‘Phat Phish Records’ and became an instant hit. Shergill is a Punjabi song writer, composer and a singer but “Bulla ki Jana” is a Kafi (classical form of Sufi poetry originating from the Sindh province) written by the Sufi Saint Bulleh Shah. While reciting Kafis, Bulleh Shah would go on dancing continuously till he attained the stage of haal (state of divine ecstasy).
Baba Bulleh Shah was born in a small village of Uch, Bahawalpur (Now in Pakistan) in 1680 to Shah Muhammad Darwaish, a preacher and a teacher in the village mosque. Bulleh Shah who was called Abdullah Shah, received his early education in Pandoke (Gujranwala, Punjab, Pakistan). He got his higher education from Ghulam Murtaza at Kasur (near Lahore). Eminent Sufi Saint, Shah Inayat Qadri, was Bulleh Shah’s spiritual guide. Bulleh Shah belonged to the Sayyiad caste and so was related to Prophet Mohammed. He remained a celibate all his life.
